State of Origin I - TV Ratings Update

Game One of the 2011 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series has claimed the title of the highest rating program this survey year so far, after an average of 2,236 million viewers (2010: 2,468m) tuned in across the 5 Capital Cities to last night’s Nine Network broadcast of the match.

Across regional Australia an average of 1,266 million viewers (2010: 1,169m) watched the match, bringing the national audience to an average of 3,502m and a peak of 4,081m.

The match was the second highest rating Origin game of all time, sitting just behind Game One last year (national average audience of 3,637m).

Averaging 2,236 million viewers and peaking at 2,547 million, the 5 City Metro audience also drove the Series opener to win its timeslot by more than 143% (total people) and take a 34.5 per cent audience share across the free-to-air networks.

The broadcast was also the number one program along the East Coast (Syd-Bri-Mel) and in Sydney-Brisbane.

In Brisbane, a sell-out crowd of 52,144 packed Suncorp Stadium to watch the XXXX Queensland Maroons claim Game One of the 2011 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series with a 16-12 win against the VB NSW Blues.

The match also dominated its timeslot amongst Brisbane television viewers, taking a 52.6 per cent audience share with an average 821,000 viewers (2010: 824,000).

In Sydney, 1,060,000 people tuned in (2010: 1,179 million) with the program winning its timeslot with a 44.7 per cent audience share.

In Melbourne, an average 298,000 viewers watched Channel Nine’s live broadcast of the match (2010: 328,000).

“This is a great way to start the 2011 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series, to be the number one program so far this year,” ARL Chief Executive, Mr Geoff Carr, said today.

“Origin is the greatest rivalry in Australian sport and it produces some of the best and most exciting moments in Rugby League and last night’s match was no exception.”

“Anyone who saw the game will certainly want to watch Game Two and there’s no doubt the audience will grow.”
